Ivy stood in the doorway of my office.
Though my focus was pinned on my computer, I felt her pensive gaze tearing into me. She was probably trying to figure me out, like she had been for the last few days after the incident at my parentsâ house. Little did she know, I was trying to figure out where my head was at, too. My numbness was the only thing I fully comprehended.
âGood morning,â she said, her voice low and sweet. âIâm headed out. I have a lunch meeting with a new client in a couple hours, then Iâm going home. Do you need anything?â
Looking over at her, the disconnection written all over her face hit me hard. I saw that look once before, during the first time I shut down on her, in the end pushing her away.
âCome here, Ivy.â
Walking around my desk, she hugged her body, just like her V-neck, polka dot ruffle dress did. I spun around in my chair as she stopped a few feet in front of me.
âIâm here,â she said, but she wasnât close enough for my liking. Reaching forward, I latched onto a few of her fingers, slowly pulling her onto my lap.
âThis isnât like last time. I donât want you to think Iâmâ¦â I sighed and leaned back in my seat.
Ivy straddled my lap, digging her knees into the padded, executive chair on both sides of me. âIâm an understanding woman, Travis. Your understanding woman. All you have to do is talk to me.â
âI know.â
âYou can tell me anything.â
âCan I?â
âIs that what it is? You doubt you can?â She cut her eyes at me, her glare softening within seconds. âThat hurts.â
âIt shouldnât.â I cupped the side of her face. âBecause itâs not true. I just donât wanna tell you anything you canât handle. Anything thatâll make you worry about me.â
âIâm worried about you now, Travis. Right now. So, now what?â She put her soft, cool hands on both sides of my face. âThe only thing I canât handle is you shutting me out, so donât do that to me again.â
While looking into her eyes, I squeezed her ass and smirked. Unmatched and sometimes unbelievable, her beauty did it for me every time. It pulled me in and held me captive.
Slowly, my smirk faded into nothing. âI thought I was past feeling guilty about me and my family almost losing Winston until I saw his shooter again.â
âWhy are the shooterâs actions your fault?â she asked, tracing her index finger over the tattoo of my last name on my chest.
âI was hardheaded back then. Winston reminded me every day to be careful, to constantly watch my surroundings, never get caught slippinâ, and to stay low. We were making hella money from the streets, gettinâ more of it every day. And we had targets on our backs because of that. Niggas were envious of the way we moved, and since Winston was in charge, they mostly wanted to get him out of the way first,â I explained as best as I could.
